Course provides support, information on mental illness
"Fellowship and support" are the watchwords of the free "Family-to-Family" psychoeducation course NAMI-NC offers in Glens Falls, in the fall. The weekly program takes place on twelve nights from 6:30 to 9:00 pm., beginning in September . There is no charge but reservations must be made in advance.
For more information, or to register, call Nancy Harrigan: (518)543-6104. The course fills up early, so call now if you are interested!
The course covers four main topics: Information on brain illnesses and available treatments, coping skills for family members, how to be an advocate for a mentally ill person and guidance in locating local services and support groups.
A team of three teachers - all family members of someone with mental illness will lead the sessions which will be broken down into lectures, group discussions and workshops. NAMI gives each participant a notebook and, every week, adds about 25 pages of information which may or may not be read at the time -- (it's not a homework assignment). At the end of the course, every one has an up-to-date, comprehensive encyclopedia on mental illness.
Some comments from previous graduates:
"It's helped me to communicate with my ill family member."
"Bravo! I was so enriched, I learned so much."
"I finally met a very special group of people who understand my situation. It will help me in future crises to recall this experience."
